About Us

From the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Medicine at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. Established in 1964 as the nation's first community-based medical school, our department boasts a rich history of medical advancements. Notably, our groundbreaking research led to the development of cisplatin as a pivotal cancer therapy, dramatically elevating the cure rate for testicular cancer patients from a mere 5% in 1974 to nearly 95% today.

Today, we are a vibrant community comprising over 1,200 dedicated faculty and staff members, committed to delivering top-tier medical education to more than 900 exceptional learners across eight community campuses statewide, including Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland, Southeast Michigan, Traverse City, and the Upper Peninsula. Collaborating closely with esteemed clinical partners like Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, Hurley Medical Center, McLaren Health, Sparrow Health, and Trinity Health, we offer outstanding internal medicine residency and subspecialty programs throughout Michigan.  Importantly, our faculty provide essential, highest quality clinical care to the greater Lansing community as a part of the MSU Health Care, and as valued members of the Sparrow and McLaren Greater Lansing Hospitals.

Our faculty members are at the forefront of groundbreaking research endeavors spanning basic, clinical, and translational fields, encompassing areas such as occupational and environmental medicine, cardiovascular science, epidemiology, clinical trials, implementation science, and healthcare delivery innovations aimed at addressing health disparities. With a strong emphasis on collaboration, many of our researchers work together with colleagues across various disciplines within Michigan State University, including engineering, communication, kinesiology, and other health sciences colleges. Moreover, our commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice is ingrained in our core values as clinicians, researchers, and educators. We embrace our commitment to being a welcoming and safe environment for all people.

Excitingly, propelled by the synergies of Michigan State University's world-class research and our new partnership with Henry Ford Health, the Department of Medicine is embarking on unprecedented growth in biomedical research in our East Lansing, Grand Rapids and Detroit campuses. Additionally, in collaboration with Corewell Health and Henry Ford Health, as well as our community-based partners, we are poised to become a leader in translational and population health research.

This is an exciting time to be a member of the Spartan Medicine, with tremendous opportunities in discovery, innovation, education, and patient care. Our vision is to become a dynamic innovator in Academic Medicine that attracts and develops future leaders who will transform the innovation landscape across Michigan and build a more just and healthy society! #SpartansWill
