Clinical Faculty
Excellent: (Must also fulfill all requirements for “Meets Expectations”)
- Teaching – Receives a national or regional Teaching Award, OR Leadership (course master or director) in an educational program that has been cited for excellence, OR develops a new course/curriculum that is accepted by the Curriculum Committee or development of an MSU course that is adopted by another school, OR mentors 3+ students in research, OR at least one mentee poster at national event, OR one mentee publication
- Research/Scholarship – At least 3 published articles, chapters, case reports, syllabi, new grant submissions, OR $50k+ extramural funding, OR Principal Investigator on Phase 1 first-in-man clinical trial
- Administration – Recognition for outstanding service to a national or regional committee or organization (includes being elected President/Governor), OR Chair or Vice Chair of volunteer committee at University or College level or Affiliated Partners (Corewell MSU Alliance, HFH+MSU)
- Clinical – Award for clinical excellence (this may include editing a clinical textbook,) OR achieves 90th percentile wRVU combined with exceeding several national benchmarks for quality on measures likely to improve patient outcomes
Very Good: (Must also fulfill all requirements for “Meets Expectations”)
- Teaching – Receives a local Teaching Award, OR Leadership (course master/director) in an educational program, OR mentors 2 students in research, OR 2+ mentee posters at regional event
- Research/Scholarship – At least two published articles, chapters, case reports, syllabi, new grant submissions, OR acquires $10,000-50,000 extramural funding, OR Co-Principal Investigator on national grant, OR Principal Investigator on Clinical Trial
- Administration – Chair or Vice Chair of volunteer department-level committee, OR member of University or College level committee
- Clinical – Achieves 75th percentile wRVU combined with several national benchmarks for quality on measures likely to improve patient outcomes
Meets Expectations
- Teaching – Participates in teaching medical students/house staff in clinical and/or didactic venues, AND receives satisfactory reviews from students/house staff
- Research/Scholarship – At least one published article, chapter, case report, syllabus, new grant submission, OR a clear plan to incorporate scholarship in the coming year, OR Co-Investigator on a Clinical Trial
- Administration – Participates in committee work/administration as needed, AND provides leadership for key programs as required, AND attends 5 or more Department meetings, AND ensures timely completion of compliance training to meet regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Clinical – Achieves 50th percentile in wRVUs, AND completes and maintains credentialing, licensing and submits patient billing on time
Needs Support:
- Teaching – Moderately deficient in meeting teaching expectations based on assignments and effort distribution, OR receives below average reviews from students/house staff
- Research/Scholarship – No published article, chapter, case report, syllabus, new grant in the past year, AND no clear plan to incorporate scholarship in the future
- Administration – No participation in committee work/administration or evidence of leadership in any program within the past year, OR attends fewer than 5 Department meetings, OR does not complete compliance training by deadline to meet regulatory and organizational requirements
- Clinical – No award for clinical excellence in 5 years, OR achieves below 50th percentile in wRVUs, OR lapse in credentialing or licensure, OR does not submit patient billing in a timely manner (this refers to a pattern or cluster of failures, not a single chart)
Needs Extensive Support
- Teaching – Significantly deficient in meeting teaching expectations based on assignments and effort distribution, OR disciplinary action or verified complaints in past year related to teaching problems, OR failure/refusal to teach MSU students/residents, OR consistently unsatisfactory evaluations by learners
- Research/Scholarship – No published article, chapter, case report, syllabus, new grant in 5 years, AND no clear plan to incorporate scholarship in the future
- Administration – No participation in committee work/administration or evidence of leadership in any program within the past 2 years
- Clinical – Persistent failure to comply with documentation/billing guidelines set by regulators (this refers to a pattern or cluster of failures, not a single chart,) OR disciplined for or convicted of inappropriate medical decision-making, OR disciplined for unprofessional behavior, OR achieves below 25th percentile in wRVUs, OR consistent failure to meet quality benchmarks when applicable
- Teaching – Receives a national or regional Teaching Award, OR Leadership (course master or director) in an educational program that has been cited for excellence, OR develops a new course/curriculum that is accepted by the Curriculum Committee or development of an MSU course that is adopted by another school, OR mentors 3+ students in research, OR at least one mentee poster at national event, OR one mentee publication

Research Faculty
Excellent: (Must also fulfill all requirements for “Meets Expectations”)
- Teaching – Receives a national or regional Teaching Award, OR Leadership (course master or director) in an educational program that has been cited for excellence, OR develops a new course/curriculum that is accepted by the Curriculum Committee or development of an MSU course that is adopted by another school, OR mentors 3+ students in research, OR at least one mentee poster at national event, OR mentee receives F, K, or National Funding Award, OR one mentee publication
- Research/Scholarship – Serving a leadership role (Principal Investigator or Program Director) on an active large ($150,000+ annual direct) competitive research grant or similarly large research contract from federal or national funding agencies, OR at least 3 peer-reviewed research publications, OR award/recognition for research excellence (national/regional/local)
- Administration – Member of study section of a national funding institution, OR serve on tenure-stream search committee, OR Chair or Vice Chair of volunteer committee at University or College level or Affiliated Partners (Corewell MSU Alliance, HFH+MSU)
Very Good: (Must also fulfill all requirements for “Meets Expectations”)
- Teaching – Receives a local Teaching Award, OR Leadership (course master/director) in an educational program, OR mentors 2 students in research, OR 2+ mentee posters at regional event
- Research/Scholarship – Serving a leadership role (Principal Investigator or Program Director) on an active small ($150,000+ annual direct) competitive research grant or similar sized research contract from federal, national, or extramural funding agencies, OR 2 or more peer-reviewed research publications
- Administration – Member of study section of local funding committees, OR Chair or Vice Chair of volunteer department-level committee, OR member of University or College level committee.
Meets Expectations:
- Teaching – Participates in teaching as assigned, AND receives satisfactory student evaluations, AND mentors 1 student in research
- Research/Scholarship – Serves as Principal Investigator who is in the bridging period or as co-investigator/collaborator on competitive research grants or research contracts (academic year only for academic year appointments) with clear plans (approved by Department Chair) to obtain funding as PI in next 2 years, AND 1 or more peer-reviewed research publications
- Administration – Participates in committee at any level, AND attends 5 or more Department meetings, AND ensures timely completion of compliance training to meet regulatory and organizational requirements
Needs Support:
- Teaching – Moderately deficient in meeting teaching expectations based on assignments and effort distribution, OR receives below average reviews from students/house staff
- Research/Scholarship – No competitive research grants or research contracts (academic year only for academic year appts) with no clear plans to obtain funding as Principal Investigator, AND no peer-reviewed research publications
- Administration – No participation in committee work/administration or evidence of leadership in any program within the past year, OR does not complete compliance training by deadline to meet regulatory and organizational requirements
Needs Extensive Support:
- Teaching – Significantly deficient in meeting teaching expectations based on assignments and effort distribution, OR disciplinary action or verified complaints in past year related to teaching problems, OR failure/refusal to teach MSU students/residents, OR consistently unsatisfactory evaluations by learners

- Division Chief/Unit Director whose Division/Unit has been cited for excellence, OR recognized locally, OR recognition for outstanding local service, OR implements operational improvement/s which increases patient access, wRVU or clinical financial margin of division, OR mentor junior faculty resulting in an increase in divisional external research funding, clinical trials, or significant improvements in wRVU
